Cooper, D. E. (2003) 'Meaning.', Chesham, Bucks.: Acumen. Central problems of philosophy.
Abstract
The early chapters of the book attempt to characterize the general notion of meaning, in terms of a relationship of 'appropriateness' between meaningful items (words, pictures, gestures or whatever) and, in the final analysis, a 'form of life'. Further chapters discuss the role of this idea of meaning in linguistics, the social sciences and the arts. A final chapter addresses the issue of 'the meaning of life'.
