Additional Information | Duration: 12 minutes Additional Information: This electroacoustic composition is the third in a series of works researched and composed at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, investigating the intrinsic properties and creative application of the granular synthesis techniques developed by Barry Truax at SFU,as part of the research programme associated with the World Soundscape Project. This work critically explores the creative potential of octophony in a concert environment using the eight-channel computer-controlled Audio Box spatial diffusion system specially developed for Truax by Richmond Sound Design. The materials for the work are drawn from historic recordings of the Canadian Pacific Railway which form part of the World Soundscape Project archive, and the compositional processes explore the musical arguments that can be articulated by manipulating the perceptual boundaries between partially recognisable sounds associated with this bygone era of steam locomotion and expanded vistas of inner spectral detail that can be generated by means of sound granulation. |
