Abstract
This book is a detailed study of the medieval fortresses (castles, town walls, towers, fortified houses) erected and maintained during the later medieval period in Aragon and along the frontier with the medieval kingdoms of Castile and Navarre. It includes surveys of historical sources, earthworks, plans and standing architecture, and also archaeological excavations. This volume accompanied an exhibition staged by the Diputación Provincial de Zaragoza at the monastery of Veruela, in north-east Spain. It forms an important initial contribution to historic archaeology in Spain, a subject which is only now attracting concerted archaeological interest.
