Abstract
This paper explores the settlement and economy of the middle Tiber valley during the early and mid imperial periods. Drawing on the results of the Tiber valley project, in particular the restudy of the South Etruria survey and more recent surveys and excavations, it explores the nature and development of the imperial landscape. In particular, the emergence of its characteristic density and wealth of settlement appears to have been both later and more sudden than previously argued. This distinctive settlement pattern can only be understood in the context of the close relationship of the area with the city of Rome. For example, villas are considered both as productive units for the supply of the city and as the rural residences of the city’s elite. However, although the agricultural and other needs of the city of Rome thoroughly restructured the economy of this area, it is also important to consider the role of local towns and markets in the organization of the settlement in the middle valley.
