Abstract
Minimal empirical attention has been paid to women’s relationships with mainstream online porn. Drawing from interviews with one hundred women in the UK, this chapter outlines how women’s accounts of their personal use of pornography demonstrate its authoritative position in relation to their experiences of sex and sexuality. Though their experience of porn differed, it was understood in a similar way, namely: as a form of expression or conversation about sex and desire; as a way to explore or validate sex and desire; and as a means to judge expectations and gain instruction on sex and desire. Taken together, such similarities demonstrate a shared understanding of pornography as a social institution that acts to authorize particular styles of sexual practice and pleasure.
