Abstract

An increase in research addressing violence and abuse of older people has been met with calls to formally recognise and respond to “elder abuse”, either through the introduction of specific criminal offences or by widening the hate crime framework to include older age. This article offers a critical review of these proposals and argues that, ultimately, neither will achieve the primary objectives of reducing violence and abuse of older people and improving prosecution and conviction rates.
