Abstract

The influence of quality management practices have on product innovation performance has attracted considerable scholarly attention from researchers. Yet, scholars lack consensus on how and in what ways this relationship manifests, with empirical examinations revealing mixed results across the literature. Due to the fragmented nature of the debates, a systematic review of the current debate is needed to enhance theorization and develop a research agenda. Therefore, this study draws on previous research to characterize the relationship between quality management and product innovation. While quality management is typically beneficial to product innovation, that relationship is not always positive as marginal evidence to the contrary exists. The review highlights the importance of both the organic and mechanistic elements of quality management to product innovation.
