Abstract

This introduction examines the core issues and definitions involved in the study of law and literature. Following an initial overview of the field, we discuss its relevance to ancient Rome and then proceed with two in-depth case studies, of Cicero’s Pro Caelio and of the prologue to Terence’s Eunuchus, to demonstrate the multivalent ways in which legal issues permeate Latin literary texts as well as the ways in which plot devices and stock characters are fundamental to legal discourse and concepts of legality. The introduction concludes by situating the present volume within the broader landscape of legal humanities scholarship and by summarizing the volume’s chapter contents and main themes.
